Man found asleep inside west Bradenton church will not be charged

MANATEE -- A man was arrested late Wednesday after numerous law enforcement officers, including the Manatee County Sheriff's Office SWAT team, surrounded a church in west Bradenton, according to Sheriff Brad Steube.

Deputies responded to The Bridge Church, 4000 75th St. W., after receiving reports a man had made possibly threatening comments and might be armed, according to sheriff's office spokesman Dave Bristow.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m. Steube said a man had been arrested and charges of burglary and trespassing were possible, officials said. The man will not be charged, authorities confirmed later.

Bristow said the man was found sleeping inside the church with a bag of food he had been given. The man was not armed and the food was not stolen.

Despite earlier uncertainty, out of extreme caution the sheriff's office sent at least a couple dozen deputies to the scene where a sheriff's office helicopter hovered overhead.
