UNIVERSITY PARK -- All lanes reopened about 2 p.m. Wednesday after a gas leak at the Super Target near The Mall at University Town Center caused traffic at the intersection of University Parkway and Cattleman Road to be blocked in all directions for about an hour, according to the Sarasota County Fire Department and sheriff's office.
"At 12:42 p.m., we received a call that there was a gas leak at the Super Target," said Sarasota Fire Capt. Jerry Jensen.
Firefighters discovered a 4-inch gas line had been hit by contractors and the line was leaking.
By 1 p.m., traffic was closed in all directions at University Parkway and Cattleman Road. It was reopened quicker than expected, in less than hour, according to sheriff's office spokeswoman Kaitlyn Johnson.
TECO Gas Co. was on scene, according to Jensen, and worked through the afternoon to repair the damaged gas pipe.
"Once we got them on scene, they know exactly where the valves are to shut it down and get it mitigated really quickly," Jensen said.
No businesses appeared to be in any harm during the leak, Johnson said.
