MANATEE -- The Manatee County Sheriff's Office is once again warning residents to be aware of a scam involving a fraudulent telephone call from someone claiming to be with the Internal Revenue Service.
According to a release, the latest incident occurred Thursday when a resident received a message saying they owed the IRS nearly $5,000.
"The person said if they didn't pay the money, they would be arrested," the release states. "A follow-up call came in a few minutes later saying it was the Manatee Sheriff's Office and a deputy was on the way to make the arrest. Then, a third call came in saying it was the IRS again and that an arrest wouldn't be made if the money was paid."
Deputies said the potential victim recognized it was a scam and alerted the sheriff's office. The IRS does not operate in this manner, a release states, and will not contact people over the phone.
