SARASOTA --The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office issued a warning Tuesday about burglars in the area using a sophisticated new twist to break into Manatee and Sarasota county homes.
Well-dressed women are going into gated communities driving luxury rental cars. They wait for residents to leave and often ring the doorbell to confirm no one is home. Then they break in and steal jewelry and other valuable items.
To prevent this crime of opportunity:
-- Set home alarms every time you leave, even for just a little while.
-- Keep windows and doors locked at all times.
-- Be observant and report unfamiliar people loitering around your neighborhood.
-- Report anyone knocking on doors or sitting in vehicles that do not belong to your neighbors.
-- Write down vehicle and tag information if possible.
-- Do not confront someone who appears suspicious.
-- Immediately report any concerns to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office's non-emergency number, 316-1201, or 911 if you feel threatened by a suspicious person's presence. Make these reports in a timely manner so deputies can respond while the people are still in the area and verify who they are and why they are there.
