MANATEE — This weekend’s DUI sweep by the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office resulted in seven arrests, including three DUIs; 14 citations, including 11 for speeding; three written warnings; and two defective equipment correction cards.
The sweep began Friday night and ended early Saturday.
More than 17,000 people are killed and another 305,000 people injured annually as a result of impaired drivers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. NHTSA studies show the average DUI driver commits the violation 80 times per year or once every four to five nights.
National averages show an alcohol-related fatality occurs every 30 minutes, which costs society more than $54 billion annually in lost productivity, medical expenses, damages and other expenditures, according to NHTSA.
