MANATEE -- A 38-year-old woman was killed and another was injured when they tried to run across U.S. 41 and were struck by vehicles, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

Just before 7 a.m., the women got off a transit bus in the 6200 block of 14th Street West and ran across the road into the path of a southbound Ford E350 driven by a Bradenton man.

One of the women, Michelena Ann Lopez, was knocked into the northbound lanes and struck by a northbound Hyundai Santa Fe driven by a Bradenton woman. FHP said.

Lopez, of Bradenton, was taken to Blake Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.

The second woman was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital with what were described as minor injuries, according to a FHP news release..

Troopers said the drivers would not be charged since the women tried to cross U.S. 41 away from an intersection.

After the crash, the northbound lanes of U.S. 41 were blocked for about 90 minutes.
