SARASOTA -- Several people were injured in a crash just before 7 p.m. Thursday, including an ambulance with a patient inside.
At least one emergency worker was injured in the accident involving up to five vehicles with at least six people injured. Low cloud cover prevented seriously injured patients from being flown by helicopter to area hospitals.
The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office helped the Florida Highway Patrol with the crash at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Landings Boulevard.
All traffic lanes of U.S. 41 were closed until about 7:30 p.m. Southbound lanes reopened about 7:30 p.m. but northbound lanes remained closed until 8 p.m.
The Sheriff’s Office is requesting the public avoid this area because of heavy traffic congestion and emergency personnel on scene.
Both lanes of U.S. 41 were closed for more than a half-hour as rescue workers worked the scene. The southbound lanes were opened at about 7:30 p.m. but northbound lanes remained closed until at least 8 p.m.
