SARASOTA -- A pedestrian was killed Friday morning after a car struck her in Sarasota and sped off, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Joyce Niemeier Sanders, 74, was walking in the northbound bicycle lane of Honore Avenue at 7:18 a.m., troopers said, when the front corner of a northbound vehicle struck her.
Sanders was thrown into the east shoulder of the road, into the grass, according to FHP. She was pronounced dead by a paramedic at 7:23 a.m.
The vehicle, described as a brown or gold, 2010 or newer Ford pick-up truck, immediately fled the scene. Troopers said the car should have right-front-end damage, such as to the mirror, headlight or bumper.
