MANATEE -- A 24-year-old Sarasota woman was killed early Friday when she lost control of her car and slammed into a utility pole along U.S. 41 near Sarasota Bradenton International Airport, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened about 1:30 a.m. near the intersection with Somerset Avenue.

Troopers said Destaney Richardson was traveling north on U.S. 41 "at a high rate of speed approaching a left curve," when she lost control, rotated counter clockwise across the southbound lanes, left the road and struck a utility pole.

She was pronounced dead on the scene.

No other vehicles were involved, according to FHP.
