Bradenton cyclist Michael DiLandro succumbs to injuries from Sunday car collision

MANATEE — A bicyclist hospitalized in critical condition after being struck by a car about 8:30 p.m. Sunday night died Monday at Blake Medical Center.

Michael DiLandro, 29, Bradenton, was riding southbound in the middle of a dark stretch of Rye Road when he was struck from behind by a vehicle driven by a 16-year-old with a 13-year-old, 2-year-old and baby in the car, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP officials said DiLandro was wearing dark clothing and had no lights on his bike, as required by law, or a helmet on at the time of the crash.The driver said he did not see DiLandro, troopers said. No one in the car was injured.

No charges had been filed as of Thursday night.

Just before 7 a.m. Monday, DiLandro’s brother, Tommy, posted this message on his Facebook page: “As some of you may know my brother Michael DiLandro was in a bad accident last night....today he is fighting for his life...My family and I appreciate all the love and support from everyone already....please keep Michael in your prayers. #GodBless.”

Justin Layman, one of DiLandro’s childhood friends, tweeted the following Monday morning: “My childhood friend Michael DiLandro was in a bad car accident last night and is fighting for his life. My thoughts are with ya brother.”

Later Monday night, Layman wrote: “RIP Michael DiLandro It’s crazy to think you are gone.”

A funeral service for DiLandro will be held from 2-4 p.m. Saturday at Happy Gospel Center, 1915 53rd Ave. E., Bradenton.
