Man, 53, drowns in Gulf off Sarasota park

SARASOTA -- A 53-year-old man drowned Sunday in the Gulf of Mexico off North Jetty Park on Casey Key, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded to the park about 6:33 p.m., when two swimmers, Vincent Charles Daniels of Nokomis, and his girlfriend were reported to be in distress "just beyond the swim marker, about 100 yards offshore, parallel with the end of the rocks," the sheriff's office said.

Three people on surf boards paddled out to give aid, and the sheriff's office Marine Unit also responded.

"The people on the surf board were able to get the female on the board safely," but Daniels was unconscious.

Paramedics onshore attempted CPR to revive Daniels, but he later was pronounced dead at Venice Regional Bayfront Health, according to the sheriff's office.
