Manatee Hurricanes head track coach Mike Smith is a pretty cool customer.
"He shows no emotion," senior sprinter Kavious Price said.
Coach let it loose last Saturday when the Canes 4-x-100 relay team of Kelvin McKnight, Jarqueris Laughlin, Sam Vrinios and Price seized an early lead and blew away the field in the Class 4A state championships at Jacksonville.
As Laughlin handed Vrinios the baton and the lead at the relay's midway point, Smith was ecstatic: "There must have been 5,000 people in the stands on the other side of the track and every one of them heard me."
Speaking of state champions, big ups to Bayshore High senior Joy Norman, who won the Class 2A high jump on her final attempt.
Brittany Bomar, Palmetto High alum and former Dazzler dance-team captain, is the new director for Braden River High's Black Pearls dance program.

Their officers are President Ellen Linsley, vice president Bunny Klein, secretary Cheryl Gaynor, treasurer Jeanette Rothberg and board members Luann Ackerman, Mary DeJong, Ruth McKinnen and Pam McMillen.
