Vin's People: Two local women receive top honors

Bows and bouquets to Mary Cantrell and Cheri Coryea.

They were among 10 women each named Tampa Bay Business Journal's 2012 BusinessWoman of the Year at the Innisbrook Golf Resort in Palm Harbor last Friday.

Cantrell, the director at Manatee Technical Institute, was recognized in the education category.

Coryea, Manatee County's director of neighborhood services, was honored in government.

They were among 51 finalists.

n Congrats to Jackie and Thomas Christo, celebrating their 20th anniversary with Custom Video Productions, 4016 Cortez Road, Unit 1203 in the Village on Cortez.

n Joel Godett just landed a sweet gig as the voice of Ball State athletics.

Last year he did radio for the Bradenton Marauders before moving to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the Texas Rangers Class-A affiliate.

Godett succeeds Morry Mannies, a Ball State institution since 1956!

n Big ups to Lauren Pierce, named captain for the Manatee School for the Arts Heat dance team.

n Manatee High's Class of 1967 has expanded its 45th reunion to include the classes of 1966 and 1968. The fun begins with a meet-and-greet Sept. 28 at the Courtyard Marriott. On Sept. 29, there's a dinner buffet at the Bradenton Country Club.

n Bradenton Fire Deparment Lt. Tim Geer, a 16-year veteran, received the 13th District Congressional Fire and Res­cue/EMS Career Service Award.

n Props to the FFA chapters at Braden River High and Southeast. They were two of only four FFA chapters in Florida to receive the maximum three stars in the FFA National Chapter Award program.

It's based on community, chapter and student development.

The stewardship of advisors Deb Barry and Mike Buckley surely had something to do with it, too.

n Manatee Memorial Hospital Employee Activities Committee members Michelle Cervantes, Cindy May and Karen Sobolewski brought backpacks filled with school supplies, donated by MMH employees, to Palmetto Elementary.

n West Manatee Fire Rescue promoted Capt. Rich Jasinski to battalion chief, Lt. Jimmy Leigh to captain, Firefighter Ben Rigney to lieutenant and Firefighter Andrew Lauricella to first class.
