Canes’ foe reawakens old ghosts

Seeing Fort Pierce Central at Hawkins Stadium in tonight’s Class 7A-Region 3 final against Manatee is going to bring back memories.

Many moons ago when yours truly was sports editor for the Boca Raton News, I followed Boca High and Atlantic High on numerous road trips to games at Fort Pierce’s Lawnwood Stadium.

Don’t recall them ever getting out of there victorious, either.

The home cooking was strong at Fort Pierce.

Not that the Cobras needed any.

Every time they’d go down to Boca for a track meet, Bobcats head football coach Rod Montgomery would be flabbergasted by the plethora of athletes Fort Pierce brought for field events alone.

Every one looked like they were 6 feet 3, 230 pounds or bigger.

“We’ve got two kids that size,” Montgomery would cry out. “They’ve got a whole busload!”

Gooooo Canes!
