Rivalry pits boss vs. boss at restaurant

Sunday ought to be interesting at the State Road 70 Bob Evans restaurant, where the staff always wears the jerseys of their favorite teams on NFL game days.

Which means General Manager Tom Radakovitz and Assistant Manager Stephen Ditewig will be talking friendly smack to each other and be on the receiving end of some ribbing from customers with the NFC Championship game later that afternoon.

Tom is a Packers fan.

Stephen is a Bears fan.

Way I heard it, the loser has to close Sunday night of the Super Bowl.

n Chef Dave Shiplett of SOMA Diner swept the Judges Awards at Taste magazine’s first Chef’s Competition, winning best entree (Southern beef short rib) and best dessert (Chocolate coconut cupcake with vanilla ice cream).

The People’s Choice award was a tie between SOMA’s best entree and MartiniVille’s best entree (Beef short ribs nachos).

MartiniVille also won best dessert (Raspberry chocolate molten cake).

Besides Shiplett, the chefs were Mattison’s Greg Campbell, Ortygia’s Gaetano Cannata and MartiniVille’s Jim Moretti.

Judges were Gail Greco, Bonner Joy and Kristine Nickel.

The Women’s Resource Center of Manatee was the event’s beneficiary.

n Ed Pedersen, a World War II Navy veteran and Bradenton Police Department information desk volunteer, is 84.

n Bashaw Elementary fifth-grader Abbie Owens was selected to represent Manatee County at this weekend’s Florida Music Educators Association All State Elementary Chorus in Tampa.

Her proud parents are Chris and Lana Owens.

n John Leggero, former Zio’s owner and father of actress/comedian Natasha Leggero, is 61.

n Megan Body made dean’s list for the fall semester at High Point (N.C.) University, where she is a freshman pre-med major.

n Here’s wishing a speedy recovery to former MHS Principal Wesley “Chad” Choate, who just turned 80.

n Albertson’s is donating $5,000 to Bradenton Elks Post 1511’s Feeding Empty Little Tummies (E.F.E.L.T) program.

It feeds 50 homeless students at Abel Elementary and has picked up 14 more at Sea Breeze.
