Carnival to help heal hearts

The first Beach Bistro Winter Carnival, a culinary event at the Beach Bistro and The Concession Golf Club to benefit the All Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Aldo Castaneda Foundation, will be held Jan. 20-22.

It will feature some of the country’s prominent chefs and golf with top professionals.

The event is being organized by longtime Beach Bistro proprietor Sean Murphy and his wife, Susan.

Years ago, Dr. Aldo Castaneda and Dr. James Lock of Boston Children’s Hospital achieved breakthroughs in corrective heart surgery for infants and little children.

Heart defects are the No. 1 birth defect in the world.

One of their patients was Alexandra Murphy, Sean and Susan Murphy’s daughter, who was not supposed to live to the age of 5. She is now working at Seattle Children’s Hospital with a pediatric psychology team.

“They saved Lexa’s life,” Murphy said. “Now it’s our turn to help these doctors save other children.”

With assistance from colleagues at Boston Children’s and Harvard University, Castaneda is operating a pediatric cardiac surgical training center in Guatemala.

Among the Winter Carnival festivities to help his cause are:

n A Jan. 20 dinner on the beach at the Beach Bistro on Anna Maria Island.

n A luncheon and golf tournament on Jan. 21 at the Concession hosted by Tony Jacklin and Paul Azinger with lessons from Jonathan Yarwood.

n A wine seminar and tasting luncheon on Jan. 22 on the beach at Beach Bistro hosted by Michael Weiss, a professor of wine at the Culinary Institute of America and the James Beard Award-Winning author of “Exploring Wine.”

On the evening of Jan. 22, the keynote celebration tasting dinner at The Concession will be hosted by Roy Yamaguchi and will feature signature preparations by:

n James Beard Award-winning chef Kevin Rathbun of Atlanta.

n Brian Landry, chef of Galatoires in New Orleans.

n James Beard Award-winning chef Marty Blitz from Tampa.

n Chef Ray Arpke of Longboat Key’s Euphemia Haye.

Also at the dinner, Seth Cripe, former winemaker at Caymus, will pour his new Pinot Noir, “Lola.”

There also will be winemakers and wines from Girard winery.
