Ripken league crowns three fall baseball champions

The Heritage Harbor Cal Ripken Baseball league wrapped up its fall season with last week’s tournament that concluded Saturday.

The Yankees won three games, including the championship contest 19-2 in five innings over the Brewers, for the rookie division crown.

The Red Sox outlasted eight teams for the minors division title. They beat the Dodgers 9-6 in seven innings, scoring three runs in the extra frame for the championship.

And in the four-team majors division, the Rays outslugged the Rangers 14-6 for the title.

Registration has already begun for the spring season, which is slated to start at the end of February.

A beach volleyball tournament is taking place Saturday, Dec. 18, on the Manatee Public Beach on Anna Maria Island.

The event is a USA volleyball tournament, and the Manatee Area Volleyball Club is the host.

Various divisions will be used for both adults and juniors.

The entry fee is $20 for doubles and $15 for 4s or 6s for the juniors. Meanwhile, the cost for adults is $25 for doubles, $20 for 4s and $15 for 6s.

The Manatee County Hockey Club’s Golden Manatees were edged 4-3 on Friday night against Freedom at the Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex.

Freedom jumped out to a 3-1 lead. However, the Golden Manatees roared back, knotting the game at 3 apiece behind two Raven Woodring goals.

But Freedom’s David Greenberg scored with 1:44 left in the second period, and Manatee couldn’t find the net in the third.

The loss drops Manatee to 7-4 with 14 points in the Central Division, which is five behind first-place Newsome Blue.

The Golden Manatees return to the ice for a home match against Sarasota on Dec. 17.

The Palmetto Trojans are sending two cheer/dance squads to the 2010 Pop Warner National Championships.

The competition coincides with the Pop Warner Super Bowl, which started last Saturday and runs through this Saturday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista.

The Trojans sent a team to the tiny mite dance division and the junior pee wee (small) division. Both are dance squads.

The Manatee East Little League’s Titans won the minors division for the fall season after going undefeated. Team members include: Connor Krug, Jake Krug, Nicolas Hadad, Chase Yniquez, Austin Jenkins, Rylan Buck, Christopher Short, Andrew Huxtable, Logan McGinnes, Carter Chapin and Logan Fielder.
