Sugar ’Canes, Silver Stars rock at camp

Manatee High’s Sugar ’Canes and the Lakewood Ranch Silver Stars rocked at the recent Universal Dance Association summer camp at UCF.

Sugar ’Canes Lauren Bellant, Danielle Kibby, Crystal Krause, Breslyn Reiber and Heather Ripley earned UDA All-America honors.

So did Silver Stars Rachel Alterisio, Melanie Hahn, Ashleigh Kiser and Razan Waliagha.

Both squads won overall superior trophies among other awards.

MHS director Lori O’Leary’s Sugar ’Canes qualified for nationals for the 25th year in a row.

LRHS director Hope Hahn’s Silver Stars will skip nationals while they rebuild the program.

n Lynn and Ken Pearson are married 40 years.

n Bradenton Marauders GM Dan Wolfert and wife Christine named their first bundle of love Emma Grace — a righty who can hit from both sides of the plate, according to Pop’s projections.

n Nick Sabella’s final neurosurgery at Tampa General was successful.

He’ll have a brain scan Aug. 27, almost seven years after his first benign brain tumor was found.

n Wilma Miller, one of 11 children raised on a western Pennsylvania farm, is 100 July 29.

n This year’s Chad Choate Jr. Scholarship recipients are Brittany Butler, John Eibe, Kevin Flanagan, Alex Garner, Candice Goodman, Megan Howard, Keith Jaudon, Jay Jaudon, Emily Jaudon, Will Leebens, Nicholas McDuffee, Jacob McDuffee, Kari Michaelsen, Krista Michaelsen, Andrew Morrish, Matthew Radauscher, Sarah Scott, Krystal Weaver and Kyle Whalen.

The scholarship has awarded $109,450 to 100 students so far.

The seventh annual Chad Choate Jr. Scholarship tournament is Oct. 23 at IMG Academies Golf & Country Club.
