MANATEE — Dr. Owen McCarthy, longtime Manatee High School team physician and sideline fixture for 40 years, died this morning. He was 73.
According to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, McCarthy was found by his wife, Dottie, on an outside patio of their home in the 6400 block of Third Avenue West, dead of a gunshot wound.
Sheriff’s officials have ruled it an apparent suicide.
“God, this hurts,” said Eddie Shannon, who could be seen all these years not far from McCarthy’s side on the sidelines. “This is a loss. He loved kids, did his best to see kids play. Every game he was there, home or away. God, he’s going to be missed.”
