You’d think filling in for Regis Philbin and sitting with Kelly Ripa on network TV would make a guy nervous, right?
Jason Colthorp felt right at home.
“It was great,” said the 1992 Manatee High alum and TV newscaster after co-hosting “Live! With Regis and Kelly” Thursday morning in the Big Apple. “The show is an hour, but it was so spontaneous, so unrehearsed it felt like two minutes.”
A late news anchor with WILX-TV in Lansing, Mich., the former Cane News sportscaster was among five contest winners for local newscasters nationwide to co-host the popular morning show.
“I had nerves the last two days, but Kelly put me at ease,” Jason said. “I just said keep it simple, be yourself, smile and have a good time.”
Which wasn’t hard.
Jason looked and sounded right at home, kidding Kelly about her biceps, doing a spot-on imitation of Regis after another Notre Dame loss, and telling how he and wife Julie met.
She was in the audience, along with Jason’s MHS classmate, Laura McDonough, and Robin Cade, who taught him at MHS.
“What a thrill,” he said.
