PHS, MHS jazz bands perform this weekend

Enjoy jazz?

Check out the jazz bands from Palmetto and Manatee high schools, which are performing this weekend as part of Manatee Jazz Fest, a month-long celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month.

Palmetto will play from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Palmetto Historical Park and Manatee County Agricultural Museum, 515 10th Ave. W., Palmetto.

The concert is free.

Manatee High’s Jazz Ensemble will play at 7 p.m. Sunday, opening a special show at Manatee Players Riverfront Theater, 102 Old Main St., Bradenton.

Also performing that night is soulRcoaster, featuring vocalist Karen Greenley, guitarists Dr. Tony Rizzo and Don Dean Jr., keyboardist Mike Poncelet and percussionist Nick Dow.

Hanno, who attended Palma Sola Elementary, King and graduated from Manatee High, just finished his first tour of duty in Iraq.

n Lakewood Ranch High School Marching Mustang percussionist Rebecca Rhodes is 17.

n There’s a benefit for Pieter Hahn at Tequila Beach Sports Grille, 7423 Manatee Ave. W., 4-8 p.m. Sunday.

Many folks remember Hahn as someone who spearheaded fundraisers for others in need, especially when he was as manager of the old Fumble-In.

Now the manager of Fantasy Travel, he’s the one in financial need after recent surgeries.
