A handy idea for autograph by country star

When folks ask for a country star’s autograph, they usually offer the signee a photo, magazine, sheet of paper, a hat or T-shirt.

Even some place on their own anatomy.

Then there’s Gus Sokos, who came up with a handy autograph idea Saturday at the DeSoto Seafood Fest.

He had Tracy Byrd autograph a handle of Jose Cuervo, apropos of the singer’s 2002 hit, “Ten Rounds With Jose Cuervo,” that had Saturday night’s main stage crowd in full roar.

n Happy 5th to Joshua Garrett and happy 7th to sister Morgan from great-grands Jack and Darlene Stewart.

n Glad to hear grocery manager Tom “Slip” Markiewicz is back at the Westgate Shopping Center Publix after January back surgery.

Slip was 6 feet 4, but is now 5 feet 11.

n Sue Manring is 39. For the umpteenth time.

n Palmetto High baseball coach Joe Collis and his Tigers express their gratitude to the good folks who donated to the ballclub’s first ever 100-inning fundraising marathon.

They surpassed $7,000.

“There is no way I could name all the people who helped make this a complete success,” Collis said. “But to all the families, friends and businesses who donated money to the game — thank you!”

n LRHS Marching Mustang trumpet player Zachary Correa is 15.

n MHS cheerleader Elly Ayres has been celebrating spring break in real style.

She was in Paris this week with aunt Christine Ayres.

Parents Deb and John and sister Carly are envious.

n Susie Henderson is 80 years young.

Family and friends threw a surprise party at Manatee United Methodist Church, where the birthday girl has been pianist most of her life.

n United Way’s dunk tank raised $2,286 at the DeSoto Seafood Fest.

n LRHS cheerleader Ashley Collins is “Sweet 16” on Saturday.

n NBC’s Willard Scott gave a shout out Thursday to Bradenton’s Ruth Smith for her 104th birthday.

When they showed her picture, the celebrity weatherman mentioned that when Smith was asked what keeps her going, she said: “A daily sip of Jack Daniels!”
