Rowlett boys choir, soloist to sing national anthems

If you go to McKechnie Field for today’s game with the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Netherlands, you’re in for a real treat.

The Rowlett Magnet School Boys Choir will be singing our national anthem.

But that’s not all.

Fifth-grader and soloist Kevin Teachey also will sing the Netherlands’ national anthem — in Dutch!

“Kevin has worked hard to learn about the song and how to sing it,” said David Walters, Rowlett’s magnet school coordinator. “It sounds beautiful — even though I don’t know the language.”

The Rowlett boys choir also includes Joshua Brunner, Luke Brunner, Jakob Conners, Brandon Edwards, Jacob Hoffman, Roberto Guzman, A. J. Hunter, Curtis Hostetler, Jack Kelly, Dawson Marshall, Ryan Simecek, Brian Teachey, Luka Torralva, Yoshua Torralva and Kyle Wampler.

n Got any CDs or DVDs you want to give to a noble cause?

Folks can donate them to our troops at Palmetto’s Wal-Mart, 508 10th St. E., thanks to a program put together by store associates Rick and Lisa Bapst.

There are decorated boxes for collection of new/used CDs and DVDs at the main grocery door and the pharmacy door.

There are also pre-addressed envelopes, each with the name of a deployed soldier to whom anyone can write letters and drop off at those boxes.

For details, call Al Hartfree, Palmetto Wal-Mart’s community involvement manager, at 723-2199 or 723-1887.

n Don Allen is 101. The Council Bluffs, Iowa, resident visited Nadine and Don Allen Jr. in Parrish and enjoyed a birthday bash that included folks from around southwest Florida, as well as Rhode Island, Connecticut and Washington state.

Allen lives alone, does his own housework, laundry and windows, keeps a vegetable garden and does the canning and freezing.
