Junior League honors three with 2009 Women in Strength Awards

A bow to Ruth Lyerly, Tristan Smith and Valerie Wojciechowicz, winners of the Junior League of Manatee County’s 2009 Women in Strength Awards to benefit the PACE Center for Girls of Manatee County.

Lyerly, a community volunteer, Smith, who is with the PACE Center, and Wojciechowicz, an inspirational speaker, will be honored at the Women in Strength Awards Luncheon Feb. 27 at the Bradenton Country Club.

The awards recognize community women who have overcome significant obstacles to achieve personally and professionally.

n King Middle’s dance team took second at the Florida Dance Team Director’s Association State Competition at Oviedo H.S. in Orlando.

Director Debbie Miele’s first-year squad, which also earned an overall Team Excellent Rating Award, missed first place by one point.

n The Knights of Columbus, St. Frances X. Cabrini Council 12155, holds its third annual Men’s Yard Sale of tools, sporting equipment, furniture, appliances, books and work clothing Saturday, 7 a.m., at 12001 69th Street East, Parrish.

n The youth Champions MMA program awarded yellow belts in mixed martial arts to Griffen Scott, Hannah Henderson, Ashley Lock and Katie Henderson, as well as second yellow stripes to Landon Howes, Vanessa and Alexandra Ellis, and first yellow stripes to Dom Bass and Ian Slater.

n Tickets are going fast to the American Legion Kirby Stewart Post 24’s annual variety show Feb. 28 at 8 p.m.

Comedienne Charlene McCullough is the headliner, direct from the Grand Ole Opry.

Among the performances will be Gloria Wilkenson’s “Patsy Clinie,” Ron Austin’s “Elvis,” Jani Best’s “Tammy Wynette” and “Shania Twain,” as well as the Sandpiper Barber Shop Chorus and Auxiliary’s own “Hot Flash Dancers.”

Loretta Fit is producer and director.

Bradenton City Councilmember Marianne Barnebey will emcee.
