The Pirates will be holding auditions Jan. 31 at the ol’ ballyard on Ninth Street West beginning at 10 a.m.

n MHS cheerleading captain Lauren Souris is 18 on Saturday.

n Theresa Stewart, the real brains behind the inner workings of the Manatee County School District’s high school network, is retiring after 35 years.

The 1968 Southeast grad was a secretary at her alma mater from 1974 to 2000, then moved downtown working for administrators such as Herb Tschappat, Roy Larson and Angela Essig.

Today is her last day.

n PHS cheerleader Bethany Saxon is 17 on Monday, the day of the Manatee County Fair’s cheerleading competition.

n Among the teachers vying for 106.5 CTQ’s Teacher of the Month are Braden River Elementary’s Joni Ramer, Johnson Middle’s Ann Cruikshank and Dawn Patterson of Imagine Charter School.

n Richard Parrott, whose skill behind the Shake Pit grill reflects his training at MTI’s Culinary Arts Programs, is 18.

n One of the many people moved by Joan Medlin’s passing at Harllee Middle was former student X-Tavia Bailey, now an Amer-I-Can administrator at Sugg Middle.

Medlin, who spent 34 years at the school, was her sixth-grade advanced English teacher.

“She was more than a teacher,” Bailey said. “She was a soft spirit who always stays with you. She is the one who helped me turn everything around because she believed in me. I loved her.”

Medlin, 59, died Dec. 27.
