Sea Breeze student stars in Nutcracker at MCC

A bow to Mattison Bedinghaus, a 10-year-old ballet student at Allison’s Dance Centre of Bradenton. She will portray Clara in the Dance Theatre of Bradenton’s 2008 performance of the Nutcracker Ballet on Saturday and Sunday at MCC’s Neel Center for the Performing Arts.

The Sea Breeze Elementary fifth-grader is one of the youngest dancers ever chosen by the company for the lead role in the holiday ballet favorite.

Mattison will dance with Eddy Tovar, now in his 10th season with the Orlando Ballet and guest dancer of the Los Angeles Ballet.

Saturday’s show is 7 p.m.; Sunday’s, 2 p.m.

n Props to the fourth-graders in Vicki Capestany’s and Rebecca Rose’s classes at Rowlett Elementary, who created class quilts for SOLVE, a maternity home in Bradenton.

They read Patricia Polacco’s “The Keeping Quilt” with USF interns Megan Hunsader and Nicole Lerardi and talked about being thankful for family and friends.

Each student was given a fabric square to decorate as they chose and assembled to make two quilts for each class.

Members of Manatee Operation Troop Support (MOTS) will provide names of local men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan so messages can be personalized, packaged and sent for the holidays.

Country station 106.5 WCTQ will do a live remote with fan favorite Maverick Johnson. Food, games, gift certificates, prizes and spring training tickets will be given away.

n Fans bringing in a canned food item will receive a raffle ticket for prizes at Sunday’s roller derby bout between Jacksonville and the Bradentucky Bombers at Florida Wheels Skating Center, 3611 Third St. W. Canned foods will be donated to the Salvation Army’s Christmas collection.
