Before there were many store-bought cleaners, people often relied on simple ingredients like baking soda, white vinegar and lemon juice for cleaning all sorts of household chores. As "green" ingredients, they are non-toxic. They also produce cleaning solutions that cost only pennies.
Samantha Kennedy, director of the Manatee County Extension Service, compiled these recipes.
Cheap cleaning solution: Mix equal parts of white vinegar, rubbing alcohol and water in a spray bottle. Add three drops of dish-washing liquid and you have the equivalent of a floor cleaner. Just spray and mop; it works great on tile floors. Also recommended for deodorizing a room.
All-purpose cleaner: Combine two teaspoons baking soda, 2½ cups warm water and ½ cup white vinegar in a large container. After fizzing dies down, pour mixture into a spray bottle and use as necessary.
Air freshener: Mix ¼ teaspoon baking soda with ¼ teaspoon white vinegar or lemon juice and ½ cup hot water in a spray bottle.
