BRADENTON — Rick Mills ended his tenure Tuesday as superintendent of the Manatee County School District.
He had been scheduled to step down July 31.
The Manatee County School Board board named Don Hall, deputy superintendent of operations, as interim superintendent.
Diana Greene, the district’s other deputy superintendent, can reapply for the permanent job.
By 4-1 vote Tuesday, the board agreed to pay Mills for five months of his contract — the most they can pay him by law — but directed his last day in office be Tuesday. Hall becomes the interim superintendent Wednesday.
In late April, Mills announced his intention to retire from the school district July 31, two years before his contract with the district ends. Mills said he had lost the support of the board after the elections in November and said couldn’t be an effective superintendent without it.
Mills, 60, spent little more two years in the district.
