At least two people were shot and many others injured when shots were fired inside the a nightclub in Palmetto at 2:17 a.m. Saturday morning, according to the Palmetto Police Department.
Shots were fired inside The Hall nightclub, 1330 U.S. 301 N., Palmetto as the club was about to let out for the night, police said.
One man shot in the chest was taken to Blake Medical Center and is expected to survive, police said. Another man shot in the leg and taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital is also expected to recover.
Several people were injured trying to flee the nightclub, investigators reported. One person suffered a sprained ankle and most of the other injuries consisted of minor cuts and scrapes.
“The injuries were serious but not life-threatening,” Palmetto Chief of Police Scott Tyler said.
Investigators are not yet sure if the two victims were shot by a bullet or struck by shrapnel or some sort of ricochet, Tyler said.
Palmetto police officers posted in the nightclub parking lot heard the shooting.
A motive or suspect has not yet been identified.
Deputies with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the nightclub to assist with the investigation.
“So far we have talked to a lot of people and no one is cooperating,” Tyler said. “The little bit they’re telling us is that the shots went off and people started running.”
Police have not yet been told of any fights or altercations in the club that may have precipitated the shooting, according to Tyler.
“I wish people would come forward with information about incidents like this because any number of people could have been killed,” Tyler said.
