MANATEE — A 26-year-old man was charged with raping an underage girl in October after her grandmother discovered she was pregnant, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.
On Nov. 20 the victim’s grandmother confronted her about missing her menstrual cycle, according to an arrest report. The girl, whose age is only listed as older than 12 but younger than 18, said that Terrell Sailes, 26, had raped her on Oct. 30. The victim knew Sailes because he lived with her grandmother’s friend.
On Nov. 21 the victim went to Manatee Memorial Hospital and confirmed that she was pregnant and five weeks along.
The victim told investigators that she was riding her bike from her home to get drinks for dinner on Oct. 30, picked up the drinks and was headed home between 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. when Sailes saw her and yelled at her to stop. The victim said she stopped and got off her bike, and Sailes told her to come towards him and stand near a tree. The victim said he then started to undress her and forcibly raped her. She said she didn’t tell her grandmother when she got home because she was afraid she would get in trouble.
The victim told investigators that she was not sexually active, and the only one who could’ve gotten her pregnant was Sailes.
The victim’s grandmother told investigators that she remembered the night that the victim got home late from getting drinks, but that the girl had blamed it on a malfunction of her bicycle chain.
Investigators interviewed Sailes on Tuesday, who originally denied any sexual contact with the victim. Then he said he “messed up,” and said sometime in October he was walking home when he saw the victim standing inside an abandoned residence and telling him to come over. He said as he approached she started to “twerk,” took off his clothes and the two had consensual sex. He said they did not use protection.
Investigators said Sailes was, “visibly upset and began crying during his confession.”
Deputies arrested Sailes on Tuesday and charged him with sexual battery on a minor without using physical force or violence that causes serious injury. He is being held in the Manatee County jail on $250,000 bond.
Sailes has been convicted of selling cocaine, burglary, attempted burglary and resisting arrest without violence. He has been charged with domestic violence including strangulation in a pending case.
