SARASOTA -- A 21-year-old man was in the intensive care unit of Sarasota Memorial Hospital on Sunday with a life-threatening injury after being shot in the head with the spear from a speargun.
Jarrod G. Ditmars was underwater with his friend, Dale H. Bartush, 23, at approximately 2 p.m. Saturday, at Twin Bridges, located east of the Sarasota Yacht Club on John Ringling Causeway, when Bartush's speargun discharged accidentally, according to a Sarasota Police Department report.
After the arrow from the speargun hit Ditmars in the head, Bartush carried Ditmars to the surface and began yelling for help, the report states.
When EMS arrived, Ditmars was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

Charges are not expected because the preliminary investigation indicates the incident was an accident, the report states.
