SARASOTA -- A dump truck driver ran a red light and nearly collided with a van turning left in a crowded Sarasota intersection on June 23, according to the Sarasota Police Department.
The van was traveling north on U.S. 41 and pulled past a green light to wait to turn left on Bee Ridge Road, according to police. The light turned yellow and the van started to turn left, and after the light turned red the dump truck entered the intersection.
The truck turned sharply, narrowly avoiding a collision with the van and driving over medians into a parking lot in the southeast corner of the intersection, according to the video. The driver of the truck was not speeding, driving 41 miles per hour in a 45 mile per hour zone.
No one was injured in the incident, and the truck driver told the responding officer that the light had been yellow when he entered the intersection.

Police said according to the video the dump truck failed to stop at the red light and was approximately 50 feet in front of the stop bar when the light turned red. The yellow change interval was lengthened at the intersection in November 2013 to meet Florida Department of Transportation requirements.
The truck driver was cited for failing to stop at a red light.
