A 13-year-old was shot dead and four others were wounded Monday night in a chaotic burst of violence that sent the injured scrambling from an apartment complex into the street.
Two men with rifles opened fire on the group and then took off, Miami-Dade police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta said early Tuesday.
The shooting happened at Northwest 75th Street and 16th Avenue just after 9 p.m. Monday.
"Several males were sitting in an open area of an apartment complex when two unknown subjects armed with what appeared to be high-powered rifles approached from the east side and opened fire," Zabaleta said. "Five individuals were struck."
After they were shot, the wounded ran onto Northwest 17th Avenue, police said
Four were taken to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. A fifth was driven by friends to North Shore Hospital.
One of the victims, a 13-year-old, died at the hospital.
"It appears this child ... was standing around and not the target," Zabaleta said. "Once again, gun violence strikes one of our teenagers."
The condition of the four wounded people, ranging in age from 22 to 28, was unknown early Tuesday, police said.
"Investigators believe that someone may have seen or heard something," Zabaleta said.
Police are asking anyone who has information to call Crimestoppers at 305-471-TIPS (8477).
