SARSOTA -- Three men were charged Thursday night with theft from a construction site after deputies found a significant amount of steel reinforcing bars in their truck, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.
A deputy was on patrol when he noticed Forrest Ryan Straughn, 28, Joshua David Chivers, 30, and Joseph Eugene Chivers, 31, driving from a posted construction site in the 3100 block of Oriole Drive in Sarasota, according to a release.
The deputy stopped them and found a large amount of steel reinforcing bars in the back of their truck, the release said. The deputy asked where they had gotten the steel and suspects said they were "scrapping" and had found the steel in the garbage.
Deputies found that the steel had actually been taken from the construction site, not the garbage, and the suspects were not authorized to take them.
The three were all charged with grand theft from a posted construction site and are being held on $1,500 bond each.
