Amanda Whidden was arrested during prositution sting. Two days later apparently she died in her sleep on Christmas.
MANATEE -- An autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death for an inmate who apparently died in her sleep Christmas Day in Manatee County jail.
Amanda Lee Whidden, 34, was booked into jail Dec. 23 after being arrested in a prostitution sting in the 5800 block of 14th Street West, according to a Manatee County Sheriff's Office arrest report.
"We are waiting on toxicology from the Medical Examiner's Office to determine the cause of death," Dave Bristow, a sheriff's office spokesman, said Monday.
Whidden had a cell mate for a short time Dec. 25 and was dozing off when the cell mate arrived, Bristow said.
"They talked for a few minutes and Ms. Whidden went back to sleep," Bristow said. "Soon after, we found her unresponsive."
Miami-based Armor Correctional Health Services, which contracted in 2012 to provide nurses and doctors to the jail at a cost to Manatee County of roughly $7.9 million annually, does a medical screening on every inmate booked into jail, Bristow said.
A call to Armor to get details involving Whidden's screening was not immediately returned.
"But we do know that Ms. Whidden wasn't transferred to the medical unit when she was booked in," Bristow added.
