MANATEE -- A registered nurse at the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center was arrested Tuesday on charges of stealing patients' personal information and using it to buy items online, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.
Two victims told police they had had their credit card information stolen while receiving treatment at the Lakewood Ranch Emergency Room, according to a release. The suspect was ordering items online using their credit card information and having them shipped to her apartment.
Deputies obtained a search warrant for the apartment of Leslie McHugh, 31, and during the search Wednesday in the 8200 block of Lakewood Ranch Boulevard discovered not only one of the items ordered with a victim's credit card, but also a hand-written ledger of personal information and credit card numbers of about 20 patients from the hospital, according to the sheriff's office.
McHugh was fired from the hospital, arrested and charged with criminal use of personal information and fraudulent use of a credit card, deputies said.
She is being held at the Manatee County jail on bonds totaling $6,000.
More charges are pending as the investigation continues, according to the sheriff's office.
