Suspect arrested in Sarasota Race Trac kidnapping and robbery

SARASOTA — A suspect has been arrested in connection with a robbery and kidnapping at a Race Trac gasoline station in Sarasota County.

Demarcus Maurice Morris, 41, was arrested Friday on an unrelated warrant and charged with armed robbery with a firearm and armed kidnapping to facilitate a felony at the Race Trac at 410 N. Tamiami Trail, Nokomis, according to a Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.

At 3:30 a.m. Sept. 22, a victim standing in the Race Trac parking lot was approached by three males, including one who displayed a black semiautomatic pistol, who ordered him into their car, according to the report.

The victim was driven to a dead-end street a short distance away. Finding only $7 in his wallet, the suspects told the victim they were going to an ATM so they could withdraw more money with the victim’s bank card, according to the report.

While at a Suntrust bank ATM in Nokomis, the victim ran from the car to a nearby business and called for help. From high-resolution surveillance of the ATM transaction, several law enforcement officers identified the suspect using the stolen card as Morris, whose arrest history includes possession and sale of cocaine, aggravated battery on an elderly victim, robbery and violation of probation.
