Sarasota sheriff: Sarasota man charged in multiple burglaries

SARASOTA -- A Sarasota man was charged Tuesday with stealing nearly $15,000 in paddle boards and fishing equipment, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.

Caleb Wagner, 28, was arrested at 3:10 p.m. Tuesday in the 1000 block of South Tamiami Trail. He was charged with four counts of unoccupied burglary and one count of grand theft, according to a report.

On Tuesday, the owner of a Nokomis bait and tackle store contacted sheriff's deputies to report that Wagner was in his store and had stolen fishing tackle. According to a report, another victim came forward and reported to the store owner that some left-handed reels were stolen from his garage. Those reels fit the description of items Wagner had brought to the store, deputies said.

Wagner admitted to stealing the gear in five different crimes against three different victims, according to a release. After he allowed deputies to search his vehicle and garage, they found more than 20 rod and reel combinations. Two stolen paddle boards were also found after deputies searched a pawn database, according to a report.

Wagner is being held on $13,500 bond but has no bond on a Pinellas County warrant for criminal mischief, according to a release.

The investigation is ongoing to identify more victims of recovered equipment, deputies said.
