HUDSON -- Family members of the primary suspect in a quadruple murder in Hudson last week say they don't believe the allegations.
Authorities suspect Adam Matos of killing his former girlfriend, her parents and her new boyfriend before taking the 4-year-old son he shared with the former girlfriend. The victims' bodies were found last Thursday in a field near a Hudson home where Matos lived with three of the victims and the child.
Matos was arrested at a Tampa hotel last Friday after a massive manhunt and is being held at the Land O' Lakes Detention Center on an aggravated assault charge related to an incident authorities believe precipitated the murders. The 4-year-old boy, Tristan, was found with Matos at the hotel and is being cared for by his mother's family.
Killed were Megan Brown, 27; Margaret and Greg Brown, both 52; and Nicholas Leonard, 37. Investigators have not said how they died, but they have searched a canal for a gun and a knife.
Court records show that Matos has a violent history. But his family paints a different picture.
“I know Adam. Adam doesn’t have a heart like that," said Nancy Matos, an aunt.
When asked about Adam Matos’ lengthy criminal record in Pennsylvania, Matos' cousin Crystal Matos said he's a changed man.
“None of us are perfect," Crystal Matos said. "We all have made some mistake in our past. But when Tristan was born, Adam wanted to be the best he can be. He went back to school. He was trying to keep a job.”
Family members acknowledge that Adam and Megan had child custody problems in the past, but they say they were always minor.
Matos is being held on $200,000 bond. Tristan is being cared for by Brown’s relatives in New Jersey until a permanent custody arrangement is worked out.
