NOKOMIS — The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office has notified next of kin of the man whose body was recovered from the Intracoastal waterway Wednesday. The victim was identified as Brian Osterhout, 67, Nokomis.
The body of the missing swimmer was recovered early Wednesday evening, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
The man was trying to retrieve a toy boat for a child when he became overpowered by a current, according to sheriff's office spokeswoman Wendy Rose.
The search for the swimmer took place near the Albee Farm Road Bridge in Nokomis about 100 yards south of marker 9 in the Intracoastal Waterway.
The Marine Patrol Unit, Sheriff’s Underwater Recovery Force, Sarasota County Lifeguard Operations, Venice Police Department and Venice Fire Department assisted in the search.
Three boats and a helicopter helped search.
