MANATEE — A 21-year-old Sarasota woman was charged with child neglect after she reportedly left her 1- and 3-year-old children with a Manatee person she had just met along with a handful of diapers, two pull-ups, a half gallon of milk and one cookie.
Ciara Liann Godet wanted to go Friday to Arcadia and stay until Sunday, but she ended up in the Manatee County jail Saturday morning on $2,000 bond, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.
Before going away, Godet contacted the Safe Children’s Coalition and asked the agency to place her children in foster care due to a lack of food and clothing, the sheriff’s office reported.
The coalition sent case worker Latoya Thomas to meet with Godet in Sarasota at 9:30 a.m. Friday and Thomas said she would buy the children diapers and clothing. Godet reportedly told Thomas she would take her children with her to Arcadia, according to the report.
But when Thomas came back from the store with the items the children were gone. Godet reportedly told Thomas she had given the children to a person who had agreed to baby-sit them at a Manatee County residence. The baby sitter contacted Godet later Friday and the two reportedly argued about the scarcity of items Godet had left for her children.
As the arguing continued, Godet texted Thomas to ask the case worker if she could pick up her children from the baby sitter, according to the report.
The case worker called the sheriff’s office, which contacted the baby sitter, who reportedly did not have the children’s names or even know Godet’s name.
Child Protective Services was called and, when Godet returned to Manatee County at 4:34 a.m. Saturday, authorities reportedly gave her a drug test that turned up positive for marijuana.
Godet, who reportedly didn’t know the name of the woman baby-sitting her children, was still in the Manatee County jail Monday, according to the sheriff’s office website.
