Bradenton man charged with leaving the scene of an accident

BRADENTON — A 19-year-old Bradenton man posted a $5,000 bond Saturday and was released from jail for leaving the scene of an accident without rendering aid to three passengers of the car he was driving.

Matthew Cartwright was the driver of a car that was involved in a crash in the woods at about 11 a.m. Friday near the 200 block of 48th Street Court East, according to a Bradenton Police Department report.

Police noted heavy front end damage to the vehicle.

Police were notified of the accident at least an hour after it happened by a security guard at Tidewater Preserve and not the driver, the report indicates.

Three passengers, one male and two females, who were in the vehicle told police that Cartwright was the driver of the vehicle. One witness said Cartwright was driving recklessly when he swerved and hit a tree.

The male passenger had a mild head injury and the females had minor leg injuries.

After being read his rights, Cartwright told police that he wasn’t driving. But police noted a rash on his collar bone consistent with friction from the driver side seat belt, the report states.
