Man found in DeSoto Mall with anti-theft device

MANATEE — A man was discovered in the DeSoto Mall on US 301 West in Bradenton Friday in possession of a “anti-theft, countermeasure” device.

Alexi Milian, 37, of Tampa, was noticed by security workers at the mall because he was carrying a bag from “American Eagle,” which is not in the mall, according to a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office report. He also carried an unusual Hot Topic bag, the report added.

Police say Milian left the Hot Topic bag in the food court bathroom.

Police detained Milian and, after retrieving the Hot Topic bag, discovered that it had a device that prohibits detection by anti-theft devices. The bag, when tested later, did allow merchandise to exit the store without setting off the alarms, the report states.

Milian was charged with using an anti-shoplifting control device and was arrested, the report states. His bond was set at $1,500.

Milian posted bail and was released from the Manatee County jail on Saturday, according to the sheriff’s office website.
