Family escapes injury from drive-by shooting near Palmetto

MANATEE -- Gunshots peppering their house awakened grandparents about 11:30 p.m. Saturday in the 1400 block of 22nd Street E., near Palmetto.

Neither the grandparents nor their granddaughter, who was in the living room, were hurt, but they found three shots that came through the west window of their living room and hit their living room television, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office reported.

Also found: three bullet holes outside by the front door, two bullet holes in their SUV, a bullet hole in a second truck in the driveway, and two bullet holes in the garage, the sheriff's report said.

A neighbor said that he was outside on his driveway when he saw a mid-'90s white Ford Explorer with four males inside approach and open fire. The neighbor took cover near his vehicle.

The sheriff's office investigated and conducted a search of the area. A 9 mm casing was found in the roadway about 100 feet west of the residence.
