Fire razes Palmetto shed as marshals investigate

North River Fire Rescue is investigating a blaze that destroyed a Palmetto shed Saturday afternoon.

The fire department responded about 1 p.m. to the structure in the 100 block of 12th Street Drive West. The flames were contained to the structure.

An investigation is ongoing to determine if the fire was accidental or intentional, said Ron Cales, North River fire marshal.

Someone was living in the shed, but no one was at the shelter when officials arrived on scene, Cales said.

Furniture inside the structure was charred and plastic items near the shed were melted.

A fire several years ago razed a house on the property, but Cales would not confirm if the two incidents are related.

Assisting in the investigation is the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, Palmetto Police Department and the state fire marshal’s office.
