Bradenton man arrested after found with overdue U-Haul truck

MANATEE — Police say a 29-year-old Bradenton man rented a U-Haul pickup truck on June 28, promised to have it back on July 14, but never returned it.

On Saturday, Jaspard J. Newell was still driving the truck that U-Haul had reported stolen, according to a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office report.

A deputy spotted Newell driving the truck into a 7-Eleven store parking lot at 5700 14th St. W., Bradenton shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday and called for back-up, the report states.

Newell was arrested without incident and charged with motor vehicle theft. He told deputies that he had spoken to U-Haul near the end of August and was under the impression he could keep the truck without paying installments on it until he returned it, according to the report.

He went on to tell deputies that he was planning on returning the vehicle after this weekend.

Newell’s bond was set at $7,500 and he remained in the Manatee County jail on Monday, according to sheriff’s office records.
