Sarasota woman charged with killing baby niece

SARASOTA -- A 56-year-old Sarasota woman has been charged with killing her 8-month-old niece in May, according to the Sarasota Police Department.

Carmen Martinez was arrested Wednesday on a charge of aggravated manslaughter of a child.

Police say Martinez was caring for Alivia Ortega on May 14, when officers responded to reports of a woman yelling for help on the third floor of the McCown Towers, 1320 Boulevard of the Arts, according to a news release.

Officers found Alivia unconscious and without a pulse. An officer and later paramedics performed CPR until a pulse was established. She was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital and later to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, where she died the next day, according to police.

An autopsy determined that the child had suffered internal injuries that resulted in her death, and the case was ruled a homicide.

Detectives say Martinez was caring for Alivia when she was injured.

Alivia would have turned 1 year old on Thursday.
