Hit-run driver careens off Cortez at Firkins, knocks down light

A small SUV and its driver are being sought after knocking down a light pole at Firkins Nissan Dealdership on Cortez Road, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

At about 4:40 a.m. Sunday, the vehicle was seen heading east on Cortez in the center lane from 17th Street West. The driver somehow lost control of the vehicle, described as a dark, small SUV. It veered southeast over the south curb of Cortez Road and onto the property of the Firkins Nissan Dealership at 1611 Cortez, according to the FHP report.

An unknown part of the SUV collided with the light pole and knocked it down. The driver continued east over the dealership's landscaping and back onto Cortez Road, then left the scene, the report states.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has any knowledge about the hit-and-run vehicle or driver should call the FHPat 239-938-1800. The crash investigator is Trooper L.M. Barnett.
