Man charged with shooting stepson during argument in Myakka City

MANATEE -- A 67-year-old man has been charged with shooting his stepson during an argument in Myakka City on Sunday, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

During the argument, at a residence in the 36200 block of Singletary Road, the suspect, Richard E. Russ, told his 48-year-old stepson to get off his porch or he would shoot him. Russ then retrieved a rifle from his house, and the stepson left the porch to get his own rifle, according to a report.

While the stepson was walking back towards the porch, Russ fired once through the screened porch, striking the younger man in the leg, according to the sheriff's office.

The victim was taken to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton with non-life-threatening injuries.

Russ was arrested and charged with aggravated battery with a firearm, according to the sheriff's office. Booking information for Russ was not available on the jail website.

The shooting was reported at 7:18 p.m. Sunday.
