Manatee deputy cuts accident victim out of crashed vehicle, DUI arrest follows

MANATEE -- A woman who was involved in a traffic crash with a Manatee County Sheriff's deputy was arrested for DUI about 1:40 a.m. Sunday.

Both vehicles were traveling north in the 5000 block of 14th Street. According to witnesses behind both vehicles, the deputy activated his right turn signal and moved from the inside lane into the middle lane.

The driver of the second vehicle simultaneously and abruptly moved from the outside into the middle lane without using her turn signal, causing a collision, according to a Manatee County Sheriff's Report.

The crash caused the sheriff's cruiser to spin out while the second car overturned and landed on its roof, the sheriff's office reported.

The deputy was able to exit his vehicle and cut the other driver out of her car.

A subsequent DUI investigation was conducted and Rhonda Mackin, 62, of Bradenton was arrested for DUI with property damage. Both vehicles were totaled and had to be towed from the scene.

Mackin was also issued a citation for careless driving. There were no injuries.
